CHIANG MAI, Thailand — October 8, 2026 — Japanese Consul General in Chiang Mai Masaru Harada paid a courtesy call on Chiang Mai Governor Thotsaphon Phuean-udom on October 8 to discuss continued cooperation between Chiang Mai and Japan, with a focus on water management, environmental issues, tourism and preparations for the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Japan.

The two sides discussed preparations for the 140th anniversary of Thai-Japanese diplomatic relations in 2027, with plans for activities to mark the occasion and further strengthen ties between the two countries. Chiang Mai said it is ready to support related activities in the province.

Water and environmental management were key topics, particularly water quality concerns along the Kok River in Mae Ai District, including monitoring for arsenic and other heavy metals and potential impacts on water quality and public health. Japan expressed readiness to share knowledge and expertise and involve specialists and academics in studying the situation and exchanging experience in water and environmental management.

Governor Thotsaphon said Chiang Mai has been continuously monitoring the Kok River, which runs for approximately 30 kilometers through the province. The province is working with Chiang Mai University and relevant agencies to install real-time water-quality monitoring systems, allowing authorities to track changes, support planning and provide the public with ongoing information.

Tourism cooperation was also discussed, including the potential impact if Chiang Mai is designated a UNESCO World Heritage city, which the two sides said could increase international interest and create further opportunities for tourism development. Consul General Harada also noted Japan’s experience in dealing with natural disasters and environmental challenges and expressed Japan’s willingness to support Thailand through exchanges involving environmental and water-management experts and academics.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continuing cooperation for the mutual benefit of people in Thailand and Japan, covering areas including the economy, society, tourism, regional development and sustainable environmental management.
